SafeRange is a quiet bracelet for people living with dementia. It notices when they leave home, so caregivers can find them before a walk turns into a search.
How it works
Two small devices. No buttons to press, nothing to remember.
A hub at home
A small unit plugs into a wall socket and quietly covers the home with a short-range signal.
A bracelet that checks in
Once a minute the bracelet wakes for a fraction of a second, answers the hub and goes back to sleep.
An alert when they leave
If check-ins stop, the hub raises the alarm and the bracelet turns on GPS to report where it is.
Built to go months without a charge
A person with dementia can't be counted on to charge a device. So the bracelet does almost nothing most of the time, and GPS stays off until it is needed.
Dignity first
SafeRange is about safety, not surveillance.
No tracking at home
Inside the home, the system only knows that the bracelet is nearby. Location is only looked up when someone has left.
Consent and the law
Alarm and location technology in Norwegian care has rules. They cover consent, and a guardian where needed. SafeRange is being designed to follow them.
Where we are
SafeRange is a working prototype. The hub and bracelet run and detect when the bracelet leaves range. GPS, mobile alerts and the caregiver app come next. We'd love to hear from families, care workers and municipalities.
